B. Wayne Hughes

B. Wayne Hughes

Mr. Hughes founded American Homes 4 Rent (NYSE: AMH) in 2011 with the vision of offering families across the United States more desirable and affordable housing choices. That vision revolutionized the housing industry and his legacy now extends far beyond our company, as evidenced by the ever-growing single-family rental sector. He served as our Chairman from October 2012 until his retirement in May 2019. Prior to that, Mr. Hughes founded Public Storage (NYSE: PSA), one of the nation’s largest real estate investment trusts, in 1972, where he served as a trustee from 1980 to 2012 and retired as Chief Executive Officer in November 2002. In 2006, Mr. Hughes founded ACE, a real estate management company with retail and office properties across California and Hawaii. He earned a B.A. in Business from the University of Southern California (USC), where he later served on the Board of Trustees and received an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration degree in 2014. He was a committed supporter of higher education and was recognized as one of USC’s most prolific donors. His relentless drive to better the world also led him to contribute his time and financial resources to cancer research through the establishment of the William Lawrence and Blanche Hughes Foundation. After 60 years as a real estate icon and dedicated philanthropist, Mr. Hughes passed away in 2021 at the age of 87.
